You could also try the increase of pointiness that Matthew mentioned but only at the bottom vertex. Ns don’t have to be symmetrical—in fact most nice ones aren’t.1 -

Re: En dash = width of n?
That line effect can be achieved even with dashes with sidebearings, by adding emdash-to-emdash kerning to close the gap.3
